Russia Launches Record Drone Blitz on Ukraine After Trump Criticizes Putin

In a massive overnight escalation, Russia unleashed its largest ever drone assault on Ukraine, deploying approximately 728 drones—many of them Iranian-made Shaheds—along with 13 missiles by July 9, according to Ukrainian military sources . The strike marked the most intense aerial attack since the conflict began, targeting cities across ten regions, with Lutsk—near the Polish border—bearing the brunt of the assault .

Ukrainian defenses, aided by electronic jamming equipment, successfully intercepted nearly all drones and missiles, while domestically produced interceptor drones played a prominent role in protecting critical infrastructure . Two civilians were reported injured in Kyiv during the attacks .

In response to the ongoing surge in Russian aggression, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged Western nations to impose tougher sanctions, especially targeting Russian oil exports, to undercut Moscow’s war finance .

Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently criticized President Vladimir Putin, signaled readiness to resume arms shipments to Ukraine. He even hinted at possibly approving 10 Patriot missile systems . Trump’s pledge reverses an earlier Pentagon decision that paused key defensive aid—including air-defense missiles—triggering renewed co-ordination between Kyiv and Washington on military support .

Bottom line:

728 drones + 13 missiles launched in Russia’s biggest-ever air attack on Ukraine.

Ukrainian intercept systems knocked nearly all incoming threats out of the sky.

Zelenskiy calls for stricter sanctions on Russian oil to hit Kremlin finances.
